How to BE a Better Leader
“Do as I say, not as I do” was a statement made to me growing up when I would catch my parents doing something we were not allowed to do. As leaders, we should be doing, acting, and modeling the beliefs we hold true. We should BE it. Luckily technology can help us in our goal to BE a better leader.
Technology can be a distraction, no doubt about that. And it may sound strange coming from me, but turn it off. Switch off or mute your devices so you can be mentally present.
Stay organised by creating favourites or stars for sites you use. And please close your unused tabs. Here’s a Pro Tip: Most browsers have a shortcut to either “close other tabs” or “close tabs to the right”. Right click on a tab and see what the menu says.
Use advanced search techniques to find what you need more quickly. The use of quotation marks, minus signs and parentheses can help refine your searches. You can search Drive for type: spreadsheets as another example of efficient searching.
You can probably talk faster than you can type. Now most devices, web browsers and apps have voice typing built in. Check under the Tools menu in your word processing app for voice typing, speech recognition or dictation tools.
Be Healthy; Take Breaks
Help remember to take breaks and move a little bit with the Moveit extension or app. It gives you orders to do some quick exercises every few minutes as you decide. Marinara is your Pomodoro Assistant. This method has you work for 25 minutes on one thing and then take a 5-minute break.
Remove distractions with browser extensions like focusd. This extension will block your access to social media or other sites that can lead you astray. After a set interval the sites are open again.
In the international school’s world, we are always dealing with time zones. Get that meeting scheduled at the right time for everyone using World Time Buddy as an app on your mobile device or a browser extension. It even integrates with your calendar so you can easily make appointments when you know everyone is going to be awake.
Research has shown that the most effective leaders are those who have a high degree of self-awareness, are observant and act mindfully. Chrome extensions like The Bell of Mindfulness, The Mindfulness App or Stop, Breathe & Think help you to calm your mind, relax and therefore be more effective as a leader.
Now it’s impossible to keep up with everything, but there are some shortcuts to help. My favourite is TL;DR or Too Long; Didn’t Read. This will take any text, site, or posts and condense it down to the main key points. You’ll get the gist of it all without having to spend time reading everything.
Remember to model the behaviours you want to see and let technology help you BE a better leader.
