5 Reasons to Set Sail

February 28, 2019

Summit at Sea

Although there are a billion reasons (that’s right, a billion) to attend Summit at Sea, we realized you probably don’t have time to read them all…. so we narrowed it down to five.

1. 8 days + 7 nights on an educational and adventurous Caribbean cruise aboard the brand new Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas

World-class Professional Development + tons of time to do cool stuff on board like zip lining, rock climbing, laser tagging, escape rooming, night clubbing, dining, swimming, water sliding, shopping, sunbathing, ultimate abyssing and playing. (Basically, all the verbs are covered.)

2. Exotic Destinations

Enjoy stops in the Caribbean’s most beautiful ports in St. Maarten, San Juan in Puerto Rico and Labadee, Hispaniola, where hiking trails, waterfalls and saltwater lagoons are around every corner. Oh, did we mention the amazing excursions?

3. Awesome Rooms + Service

From spectacular views to deluxe amenities, choose from interior, oceanview and balcony staterooms. Hungry? 24-hour complimentary room service means you will never experience a hunger pang. NE-VAHH.

4. Best. PD. Ever.

We’ve got inspirational sessions, amazing guest speakers, a demo slam competition, informative breakouts, cutting-edge demonstrations, hands-on workshops and more. Summit attendees (and their families) are also invited to join an EdTechTeam Jeep Geo Adventure in St. Maarten, where the team is tasked to put their new learnings to the test by utilizing the features of Google’s Geo products.

5. Find Your Tribe

While the formal sessions will be invigorating, attendees are sure to carry on the conversation during social events on the ship! Friendships, collaborative ideas and conversations will set sail as we take this exciting journey together. We figure, what better place to get educators excited about educational tools than by teaching them on an Eastern Caribbean cruise? Ahoy!

Summit at Sea calls upon teachers from around the globe who are doers, leaders and creators to come together and learn!

Top 5 Ways to Foster Student Creativity

November 24, 2018

On November 17th, educators from around the world gathered virtually to explore ideas around what it means to create at The Virtual Summit by EdTechTeam. Sessions ranged from Creating with Chromebooks to Creating Real World Problem Solvers and Creating Teacher Leaders. It was inspiring to see the excitement and motivation for teachers to begin creating opportunities for students immediately. Throughout the day, conversations centered on student creativity when designing instructional experiences. Empowering students through access to quality educational technology resources provides a platform for redefining learning and letting your creativity in your students and your classroom shine!

As you continue your journey on what create means to you, here are 5 ways to foster student creativity in your classroom.

Creative expression is in all of us

Start with you and the culture of your classroom. Try Sketchnoting and model your creative growth with your students as you journey alongside them. Do you use iOs devices in your classroom? Try Apple’s Everyone Can Create Project Guides to fuel creative expression in every student.

Celebrate Divergent Thinking

Cultivate the idea that there is more than one way to do something in all facets of learning. Showcase examples of products, creations, and discussions that promote different perspectives and ways to show an idea. Try presenting work to a larger audience either via Google Hangouts or a Google Site to model to students that their voice counts.

Provide choice in learning products/tasks

Providing choice is a strategy to unleash creativity and personalization in your students. Try using Digital Choice Boards or Interactive Learning Menus in your next lesson task/culminating project or a Choose Your Own Adventure Google Slide Deck. Or check out this Creative Apps Directory by SmashboardEdu. Choice allows students the freedom to be creative without restraints.

Creativity is everywhere

Integrate creativity teaching into content areas. Creativity can be taught. Intentionally highlight opportunities for discussion around creative thinking and problem solving throughout the day. Try implementing Design Thinking or Project Based Learning instructional models to facilitate creative thinking throughout a unit. Computer Science is even a great place to let student creativity shine. Programs like Google’s CS First provide scaffolded opportunities to integrate coding and creativity.

Design a culture of creativity in the classroom

Creative thinking is a mindset that needs to be nurtured. Are flexible thinking and deeper questioning evident in your classroom? Use this creativity roadmap from ASCD to get started.

What does create mean to you?

My 3-2-1 EdTechTeam Transformation- A Summit Story

June 7, 2018

On April 7 & 8, I had the opportunity to attend the EdTechTeam Ontario Summit. While I was there, I reflected on my summit experiences and realized the Ontario Summit was the 3rd summit I have attended, the 2nd summit I presented at and the biggest accomplishment in my eyes, the 1st summit I presented all by myself.

I attended my first EdTechTeam Summit in November 2016 in Niagara Falls. It was my first technology conference ever and quite overwhelming as I attended the conference alone. I didn’t know what to expect. I remember entering the gym for the opening keynote and feeling nervous and uncomfortable. Traveling from Mississauga to Niagara Falls led to me seeing zero familiar faces. As my time at the summit went on, I met some wonderful teachers and learned so much from incredible presenters. I remember going to work that Monday feeling extremely exhausted from brain overload. There was so much I learned, so many new ideas I was exposed to and couldn’t wait to try them out. I raved about my experience with my colleagues and a few more decided to attend a future conference.

That summit completely changed the path and vision I had for my teaching career. My desire to attend that summit was to learn more about how to use technology in the classroom. As expected, I learned different programs and applications I could incorporate into my classroom. Unexpectedly, however, my desire and commitment to technology in the classroom was sparked on a leadership level. I realized I didn’t want to just learn about technology for my own classroom but really saw the potential technology could have and wanted to help my colleagues see that potential, as well. This led to me playing a more active role in my school, as I became one of the go-to teachers for help with technology. I attempted to use the school technology in different lessons for different subjects and shared my knowledge and resources with other teachers.

My confidence with technology, particularly G Suite for Education, led to me presenting at the Peel Empowering Modern Learners Summer Conference in August, followed by presenting at the EdTechTeam Peel Summit in September. While I was confident in my tech skills, I was quite nervous to present in front of people, so it was comforting to have a colleague both times to present alongside.

Throughout the year, I continued to stay active within my school community with promoting technology, as well as teaching other teachers. As the March Break approached, I felt an itch to do more with technology. A few days later, as I was sorting through my emails, I saw an email to “Submit your proposal for the Ontario Summit”. I had seen the email before and disregarded it. However, at that moment, I just thought “Why not?” and decided to fill it out. When I received the email that my session had been approved and I was presenting, I was excitedly nervous!

My session, entitled “Google Forms 101” explored how to use Google Forms in the classroom. I had a good turnout and was pleased with my overall presentation, despite my unsurprising nerves. Transforming from an attendee to a presenter not only provided me with more confidence in public speaking but also networking skills.

The summits have provided me the opportunity to make personal and professional connections with fellow educators who have the same vision as myself. I am now only a click away from connecting with the right people, whether it is through email or social media. My vision to become a tech leader continues to be realized and developed with the support of my school colleagues and my social media connections. And all of this because I decided to attend my first summit.

Guatemala Google Summit 2018
By: Ginger Carlson, Colegio Americano de Guatemala

Technology is changing the way we do things. It is changing the way we access and use information, what jobs and opportunities are available for our graduates, and the way we think, create, communicate and operate in the day-to-day. Through these changes, we have more access, more connection, and more opportunities to make significant impacts on the world around us.

With these changes in mind, and how we can best prepare our students to navigate them, Colegio Americano de Guatemala (CAG) started 2018 with enthusiasm! Early this past January, CAG was honored to bring teachers together from schools across North and Latin America to host the first Google Summit ever in Guatemala and the first Student Summit in all of Latin America. The participants included 134 CAG faculty members, 76 educators from other schools, and 100 CAG high schools students. These creators of new knowledge gathered together to learn new tools, discuss inspiring ideas, experiment with new media, and Innovate for Impact!

April 6, 2018

Educators are busy people with no shortage of tasks being added to their “to do” lists each day. In the ebb and flow of a school year, it is easy to lose track of what brought you to the teaching profession and the ability to integrate your passion into your work. Reflect on the work that you do and re-ignite your passion and your purpose if you need to!
